Did God Play Good Cop/Bad Cop?

A common question raised about the Bible is this: Is the God of the Old Testament really the same God revealed in the New Testament? For many, Jesus seems so different from the God we encounter in the Old Testament. The contrast is often framed like this: the God of the Old Testament is angry, vengeful, and petty, while Jesus is kind, patient, and loving.
