In John 11, Jesus arrives at the funeral of his friend Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha. Each sister meets Him with the same confused, aching words: "If you'd been here, our brother would not have died." Depending on how you read them, their words drift between faithful declaration and heartbroken accusation. Twice in this scene, we're told Jesus is troubled — not simply confused or dysregulated, but something far more intense and visceral. We're never told exactly what stirs in Him, but in response to it all, Jesus weeps. He joins His tears to theirs, sharing something we often hide and withhold from one another. This week, as we explore what it means for our lives to touch the lives of others in Jesus' name, we'll look at the gift of shared tears.
