Jesus' stories in Luke 15 are filled with surprises. From shepherds searching for lost sheep to women searching for lost coins, the theme of lost things being searched for and found runs from beginning to end. While these stories are powerful in their own right, it is the story of a loving father who pursues his lost children that steals the show, shocking us again and again with unforeseen twists and turns. Of all the surprises contained with the story we know as the Prodigal Son, it is the shocking welcome offered by the father to his wayward son that stuns our hearts most of all. What kind of father does that? What kind of father watches his child waste his wealth, squander his inheritance, bring shame to his name, and dishonor to his family and still, after all that, doesn't hesitate to receive back his child, not with shame or guilt or conditions, but with unrivaled, conditionless welcome? This week we'll explore the story of the Prodigal Son(s) in order to better understand the surprising welcome God extends to us all.
