Surprised by Prayer
"Teach us to pray." This is the request of the disciples to Jesus - teach us to pray. For most of my Christian life, I assumed this meant that they didn't know how to pray and were asking Jesus for some instruction here. While I guess that's possible, it doesn't really make sense. These were first century Jewish men and women. Their religious culture had an established rhythm of prayer that took place three times daily; morning, afternoon, and evening. They were taught these prayers as children and prayed them throughout their lives. The disciples knew how to pray. So, if they knew how to pray, why ask Jesus to teach them? What if they weren't asking Jesus to teach them how to pray (generally speaking), but to teach them to pray more like Him. This week we'll begin the third movement of our "Surprised by Jesus" series with a three week focus called "Surprised by Prayer."
