Hospitality

This Sunday, we're moving on from the "towards" aspect of incarnational evangelism (sharing Jesus with others the way He shares Himself with us) to the "touch" component. For the next 3 weeks, we'll explore a number of intentional ways our lives can intersect with others' lives in Jesus' name. In Luke 10, Jesus is welcomed into the home of a woman named Martha. Her sister Mary is there as well, but there's a problem. Martha and Mary have very different views on what Jesus' presence requires of them. Martha is busy serving, working, and trying to get everything just right. Mary is said to be doing nothing more than sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening to Him teach. These very different approaches to Jesus' presence in their home raises a question: What does biblical hospitality look like? What does hospitality call us to do? Is it possible that we've misunderstood the purpose of hospitality and in doing so, have missed its power as well?
