Blessed are the "Meek"

Jesus says in Matthew 5:5 that the meek will inherit the earth. What does it mean to be 'meek'? There have been several approaches to this word. Some interpret it to mean weakness, others humility, and others a sense of unimportance or affliction. So, which is it, or could it be some combination of the above? Regardless of how we interpret the word, the promise is pretty amazing. The meek - whoever they are - will inherit the earth. That's a huge promise, which is all the more reason to better understand whoever it is that Jesus has in mind when He says the 'meek' will inherit the earth.
